Your Own Library, On Every Screen You Own
Plex, Jellyfin or Emby installed properly on whatever you have. A Synology or QNAP box, an Unraid build, a Windows machine, an Ubuntu server, a Raspberry Pi or something rented in a datacentre. Then it plays on the television, the phones, the tablets, the consoles and anything else in the house without anybody being told to fiddle with settings.
Getting it installed is the easy part and every guide covers it. What takes an evening is the library scanning correctly instead of half naming things, playback that does not stutter on the one television that matters, and reaching it from outside the house without leaving a hole in your router for the internet to find.
What It Runs On
Almost anything, and the machine matters less than most people expect. Playing a file straight to a television asks very little of a processor. The work only starts when something has to be converted on the fly for a device that cannot handle the original, and that is where the differences below show up.

Synology Or QNAP
The files are already there, so the server goes on the same box and nothing has to move. Installed through the built in package system or in a container, with the shares mapped properly so the library sees everything the first time it scans.
Unraid Or TrueNAS
The strongest option if you are building rather than buying, because the storage grows a disk at a time and everything runs in containers you can move later. The setup is more involved and it is the version that ages best.
A Windows PC
The quickest way to get something working today, on a machine you already have. It does mean the computer needs to stay on and awake, so we sort the power settings, otherwise the whole thing goes to sleep halfway through the evening.
Ubuntu Or Debian
Quiet, cheap to run and the version that behaves best once it is set up, since nothing else on the machine competes with it. Runs as a service, comes back after a power cut, and updates without anybody logging in to click a button.
A Raspberry Pi
Genuinely fine for a household watching one or two things at once from files that already suit the television. It is not the machine for converting anything, so the honest version is that it works well inside its limits and badly outside them.
A Cloud Server
Useful when the library needs reaching from several places rather than one house, or when your home upload speed cannot keep up with the people watching. Storage costs more than a drive at home, so it suits a smaller curated library rather than everything you own.
The one thing worth understanding before you buy anything
Direct play is when the file goes to the screen untouched, and transcoding is when the server has to convert it first. Direct play costs almost nothing and a Pi manages it. Transcoding is the expensive part, and it happens when a device cannot handle the format, or when somebody is watching from outside on a connection that will not carry the full quality.
Which means the right answer depends on your televisions and your files rather than on a specification sheet. A modern television playing your own files usually needs no conversion at all, and a house full of older devices needs a machine with hardware built for it. We work that out from what you actually own before recommending anything.
What Actually Gets Set Up
Nine things, and the install is only the first of them. The rest are the reasons a server that worked on Sunday still works in March without anybody being called about it.
Installed and running as a service
Plex, Jellyfin or Emby, whichever suits you, set up so it starts on its own after a power cut and updates without somebody logging in to click a button. On a NAS that means the right package or container, and on a PC it means the sleep settings sorted first.
Libraries that scan cleanly
Folders structured the way the software expects, so films find their posters and series get matched to the right show rather than sitting there as a list of filenames. Naming fixed on what you already have, and rules set so anything added later lands correctly on its own.
Hardware acceleration switched on
Where the machine can convert files using the graphics chip rather than the processor, that gets enabled and tested. It is the difference between one stream making a whole box struggle and four running without anybody noticing.
Every screen in the house
Televisions, streaming sticks, phones, tablets, consoles and browsers. The apps go on, they get signed in, and each one is tested on something that plays rather than left for you to discover on a Friday evening.
Separate accounts for the household
Everyone gets their own profile, so watch history and half finished episodes stay theirs. Children's accounts limited to what suits them, and guest access that only reaches what you want it to.
Subtitles and audio picked properly
Language preferences set once per person instead of adjusted every time something starts. Subtitle sources configured where you want them, and the defaults chosen so nobody is hunting through menus mid film.
Access from outside without opening the router
The usual advice is to forward a port, which puts your server on the public internet where it gets found within hours. A tunnel back to the house does the same job without exposing anything, and it is the way we would rather set it up.
The library managing itself
Sonarr, Radarr and Prowlarr handle the organising, so new files land in the right folder with the right name and the library updates without you touching it. Overseerr gives the household somewhere to put requests instead of messaging you about them.
Storage joined up and backed up
Drives, network shares and cloud storage mounted through Rclone where that suits you, so everything appears in one library rather than three. Then a check that whatever holds the collection is actually backed up somewhere, because most people find out it is not at the worst possible moment.
On what you put in it
The server plays what you point it at, and what you point it at is your own business and your own responsibility. Everything above is about running the software well. We do not source content, and we would rather say that plainly than leave it implied.
The remote access side is worth reading about on its own, since it is the part most people get wrong. Reaching the library from anywhere without a hole in the router is the same job as the tunnel on a home server, and often the two get built together.
